Graz's < rotor > Gallery Hosts 'real*utopia' Public Art Project Exploring Balkan Identity and Contemporary Utopias

exhibition · 2026-04-19

From May 24 to October 26, 2003, the alternative gallery < rotor > in Graz, recognized as the European Capital of Culture in 2003, presented the exhibition series titled 'real*utopia.' Curated by Anton Lederer and Margarethe Makovec, the initiative originated from research conducted in Graz's Gries district in 1999. Out of nearly thirty artists from Austria and Europe, fifteen were chosen to produce public artworks addressing social themes. This exhibition was part of the Balkan Consulate series, featuring contributions from cities such as Belgrade, Saint Petersburg, Istanbul, and Budapest, organized by Judit Angel. The showcased works offered critiques of utopian ideals, including significant contributions from Eriks Bozis, Mihael Milunovic, Constantin Luser, Esra Ersen, Martin Krenn, Oliver Ressler, Antal Lakner, the AES group, and Jun Yang.
