Graphic Novel 'Lamiere' Documents Life in Nairobi's Deep Sea Slum
The graphic novel 'Lamiere' (Feltrinelli, 2019), created by Danilo Deninotti, Giorgio Fontana, and Lucio Ruvidotti, portrays the struggles of life in Deep Sea, a slum located in Nairobi, Kenya. This project was initiated by Tito Faraci of Feltrinelli after Eloisa Franchi from the NGO Rainbow for Africa suggested they document its initiatives. Over the course of ten days, the authors conducted interviews with local residents, shedding light on challenges such as inadequate sanitation and social segregation, while also showcasing their resilience. Deninotti and Fontana crafted the narrative, and Ruvidotti provided illustrations, employing color strategically. Their previous work involved illustrated reportages, but 'Lamiere' proved to be their most emotionally challenging project, leading to reflections on the impact of image journalism and the necessity for action. Subsequent stories feature Margaret's recovery from a fire, Nelson's passing, and Josphat's academic achievements.
