Graphic novel 'ColoreInferno' recounts artists killed in WWI

publication · 2026-05-04

A new graphic novel, 'ColoreInferno. Artisti spezzati dalla Grande Guerra 1914-1918,' by Cecilia Valagussa and Ariel Macchi, published by IFIX Edizioni in 2018, tells the stories of nine artists who died in World War I. The book uses comics to explore the lives and deaths of figures such as Umberto Boccioni, Renato Serra, Saki, and Antonio Sant'Elia, blending historical fact with fantastical elements. Valagussa employs diverse painting techniques to channel each artist's style, while Macchi's narrative creates a doppelgänger effect between reality and imagination. The work is introduced by Maurizio Ceccato, who reflects on the long tradition of war representation in art from Lascaux to Picasso. The 112-page volume costs €19 and is available at www.ifixweb.it.
