Graphic novel biography of Niki de Saint Phalle to be released in Italy

publication · 2026-04-26

A new graphic novel biography of French artist Niki de Saint Phalle, created by Monica Foggia and Valeria Quattrocchi, will be published in Italy by Gallucci Editore on September 6. Titled "Niki de Saint Phalle. L’artista del Giardino dei Tarocchi," the 134-page book traces her career from the 1950s—marked by assemblages and paintings against patriarchy—to her large urban installations, including the Tarot Garden in Garavicchio, Maremma. Already released in the UK and Germany by Prestel, the graphic novel covers her childhood in the US, abuse by her father, work as a model for Vogue and Life, and her turn to painting as therapy. It highlights her radical feminism, anti-racism, and social engagement, blending Nouveau Réalisme, archetypal symbols, performance, and public art.
