Graphic Japan: From Hokusai to Manga Exhibition Opens in Bologna
The Museo Civico Archeologico di Bologna hosts 'Graphic Japan. Da Hokusai al Manga' from November 20, 2025 to April 6, 2026. Curated by Rossella Menegazzo and Eleonora Lanza, the exhibition traces Japanese graphic art from the Edo period (1603–1868) to the present. It features over 200 works including woodblock prints, books, albums, posters, katagami stencils, and high-craft objects. The show is organized into four sections: Nature, Figures, Sign, and Contemporary Japonism. It explores the evolution of line, technique, materials, and subjects across calligraphy, typography, drawing, design, applied arts, fashion, cinema, theater, and manga. A cultural program in collaboration with the University of Bologna, Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna, and Centro Studi d’Arte Estremo-Orientale will accompany the exhibition. Menegazzo notes the exhibition aims to reflect on the enduring appeal of Japanese graphics for Western, Asian, and Japanese audiences, highlighting the fusion of sign, image, and color in artistic creation, craftsmanship, and commercial communication.
