Grant Wood's 1926 'Corn Room' Mural Restored and Relocated at Sioux City Art Center

A 1926 mural by Grant Wood titled 'Corn Room' has undergone restoration and will be permanently displayed as a centerpiece at the Sioux City Art Center in Iowa. The seven-panel work, originally created for the Martin Hotel's dining room in Sioux City, was recently cleaned and conserved by the Midwest Art Conservation Center in Minneapolis. This conservation effort, completed in anticipation of the mural's 2026 centennial, removed decades-old varnish that had obscured details like a path through corn shocks, a small barn, and subtle atmospheric effects in pink and blue. Christopher Atkins, a curator at the art center, noted that the aging protective layer had previously muddied these elements, making it difficult to appreciate Wood's techniques with shadows, horizon, clouds, and sky. Since 2007, the mural had been housed in a small third-floor gallery, but it will now be showcased on the ground floor. Todd Behrens, the art center's director, described the restoration as transitioning the mural from artifact to art. Grant Wood, known for works like 'American Gothic,' evolved from Eurocentric Impressionism to become a leading figure in Regionalism.
