Grande Révolution domestique at Familistère de Guise

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The exhibition 'Grande Révolution domestique – Guise' at the Familistère de Guise (March 2–31, 2019) explores domestic life through contemporary feminist art. Curated by Sally Bonn, Lise Lerichomme, and Julia Ramírez-Blanco, it features around thirty artists and collectives from the collections of Frac Grand Large – Hauts-de-France and 49 Nord 6 Est Frac Lorraine. The Familistère, a cooperative housing complex founded in 1859 by Jean-Baptiste Godin, provides a utopian backdrop. Works include Martha Rosler's 'Semiotics of the Kitchen' (1974), Marge Monko's 'Nora's Sisters' (2009) linking Soviet propaganda to Elfriede Jelinek, and Justine Pluvinage's 'Amazones' (since 2017) showing women navigating Chicago. Cynthia Montier's 'Mise en pli' (2019) documents a housekeeper's 30-minute room-cleaning routine, highlighting skill and alienation. The exhibition questions whether domesticity is a prison or a site of empowerment, drawing on feminist struggles of the 1960s–70s.
