Grand Palais in Paris to undergo €466 million renovation, closing in 2020

architecture-design · 2026-04-20

The Grand Palais in Paris will close in December 2020 for a three-year renovation, with a reopening planned for spring 2023. Franco-Italian architects LAN (Local Architecture Network) are leading the €466 million project, the most extensive and costly since the building's debut at the 1900 World's Fair. Funding includes €288 million from the French government, a €150 million loan from the Réunion des Musées Nationaux (RMN), and €25 million from Chanel, which will have the grand entrance renamed after the brand. Managed by the RMN, the overhaul will feature a new entrance, six refurbished galleries, and an internal pedestrian street connecting parts of the complex. The closure forces FIAC and Paris Photo art fairs to relocate to temporary venues. The announcement was reported by The Art Newspaper on 13 February 2018.
