Grand Egyptian Museum Opens in Giza After 20-Year Delay

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Giza is set to open its doors on November 4, 2025, following more than two decades of delays. Initially scheduled for 2012, the launch has faced numerous postponements, the latest being in July 2024 due to the conflict in Gaza. Spanning 470,000 square meters and constructed by BESIX with a budget exceeding $1 billion, the museum was designed by Heneghan Peng Architects. It will showcase 24,000 square meters of exhibition space, an atrium housing a 3,200-year-old statue of Ramses the Great, a children's museum, and a conservation center. The GEM's collection boasts 57,000 artifacts, including the complete treasure of Tutankhamun, and aims to attract 15,000 to 20,000 visitors daily as part of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi's Egypt Vision 2030.
