gr-os architects restores a protected 1870 summer residence in Esplugues de Llobregat

architecture-design · 2026-07-29

Gr-os architects, led by Juan Gurrea, have rehabilitated a protected 500m² unit within the Las Torres estate in Esplugues de Llobregat, Barcelona. Originally designed by August Font Carreras in 1870 as a summer residence, the property had been altered by successive renovations and years of neglect. The project restores the original spatial configuration while introducing a flexible domestic program for a single owner who hosts family gatherings. Historical research and selective demolitions uncovered hidden elements: an original vault, sealed doors, and four types of flooring. A cataloged facade was meticulously restored; the only visible contemporary addition is a steel pergola. Interior reorganization includes a double circulation sequence, accessibility upgrades (an elevator in the former service stairwell), and a new double-height space opening the attic. Materials include walnut woodwork, white marble, hydraulic mosaic, and carpet. Energy efficiency was improved with thermal insulation, solar panels, and an air-source heat pump. The intervention respects structural vaults, coffered ceilings, and the protected facade. Photography by Simone Marcolin.
