Goya's Royal Portraits from Tobacco Factory Assigned to Seville's Museum of Fine Arts

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-21

The Ministry of Culture has permanently transferred two portraits by Francisco de Goya, depicting Carlos IV and María Luisa de Parma from 1789, to the Museum of Fine Arts in Seville. These works were initially commissioned for the Templo de la Fama and were showcased during the monarchs' oath-taking ceremony. A legal battle over ownership began in 2017 when Altadis asserted its claim, but a court ruling in March affirmed that the state retains ownership. One of the portraits is currently featured in the temporary exhibition El arte de preservar la memoria at the Archivo General de Indias, which concludes on June 15. Their inclusion will enrich the museum's narrative, highlighting a politically charged period in 1789 and completing an important chapter in Seville's artistic heritage.
