Goya's Avant-Garde Masterpieces in Medieval French Church

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Agen, located between Bordeaux and Toulouse in southwestern France, will host an unprecedented exhibition on Francisco Goya (1746–1828) from November 8, 2019, to February 10, 2020. Titled "Goya, génie d'avant-garde, le maître et son école," the show brings together nearly 90 works—paintings, drawings, and prints—from international museums including Paris, Budapest, Switzerland, Berlin, Spain, and New York. For the first time, it highlights the role of Goya's entourage and workshop artists. The medieval setting of the Église des Jacobins in Agen, built between 1254 and 1281 but heavily restored in the 19th century, provides a unique backdrop. Digital installations and a multisensory space will allow visitors to immerse themselves in Goya's techniques.
