Goya and Caravaggio meet for the first time in Rome

exhibition · 2026-04-27

For the first time, works by Francisco Goya and Caravaggio are exhibited together in Rome. The exhibition "Goya e Caravaggio: verità e ribellione" runs from January 12 to February 25, 2024, at the Sala Santa Petronilla of the Musei Capitolini. Curated by Federica Maria Papi, it pairs Goya's "Il parasole" (1777) with Caravaggio's "Buona Ventura" (1594), both early masterpieces by revolutionary artists. The collaboration arose from the Musei Capitolini lending Guido Reni's "Anima beata" to the Museo Nacional del Prado for its exhibition on Guido Reni in Madrid, on view until July 9, 2024. Goya's painting, a preparatory cartoon for tapestries destined for the dining room of the Palacio El Pardo, entered the Prado's collections in 1870. Caravaggio's work, acquired by Pope Benedict XIV in 1750 for the Musei Capitolini, depicts a gypsy stealing a ring while reading a knight's palm; a 1985 X-ray revealed the theft detail, now barely visible.
