Gourmega restaurant in Greenwich Village celebrates African diasporic culture through design and cuisine
Located at 116 West Houston Street in Greenwich Village, New York City, Gourmega is a new restaurant run by Ghetto Gastro and designed by Nigerien architect Mariam Issoufou. The establishment features a communal table crafted from Nubian alabaster, accompanied by walnut chairs and a yellow swinging door that symbolizes the sun. Historically referred to as Land of the Blacks, this site was the first free African settlement in North America. Co-founder Jon Gray seeks to enhance Black representation in downtown dining. Collaborating with Rethink Food, the kitchen transforms waste into meals for those in need. The chef's tasting menu, which draws from Asian, African, and Americas influences, is accessible through Instagram DMs. Planned artworks include pieces by Rashid Johnson and Hugh Hayden.
