Gotong Royong. Things We Do Together at Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw

The exhibition 'Gotong Royong. Things We Do Together' at Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw presents objects, artifacts, and memories from collective actions by artists in peripheral regions worldwide. Curator Marianna Dobkowska explains that 'Gotong Royong' is an Indonesian term meaning 'common duty,' reflecting a work ethic of mutual collaboration. The show features works such as Robert Kuśmirowski's performance photographs with workers and miners in Jatisura, Indonesia; Clara Ianni's video filmed during 2016 protests against the FIFA World Cup in Brazil; clothing by Alicja Wysocka and Diana Adhiambo with the Mathare Valley community in Kenya; and Centrala's Dido's Blanket—the architectural collective recently appointed to lead the Polish pavilion at the next Venice Architecture Biennale. Dobkowska states that participants view art not as market commodity but as a tool for community engagement. The exhibition is directly linked to a public program of special events, debates, and meetings where diagrams, videos, and documentation illustrate how the projects originated and evolved, allowing audiences to participate in the ongoing process.
