Göteborg International Biennial Explores Entanglement Through Historical and Contemporary Works

festival-fair · 2026-04-20

Running from 7 September to 17 November 2019, the 10th Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art, titled 'Part of the Labyrinth,' is curated by Lisa Rosendahl. The event delves into the theme of entanglement, drawing connections to Gothenburg's past and philosophers such as René Descartes. At Göteborgs Konsthall, Knud Stampe's triptych 'Väggteckning' (1970–71) illustrates factory workers, while Rikke Luther's video 'Concrete Nature' (2018–19) critiques the use of concrete in welfare state architecture. Her triptych 'The Planetary Sand Bank' (2019) highlights the environmental consequences of sand extraction. Additionally, Åsa Elzén's 'Transcripts of a Fallow' (2019) at Röda Sten Konsthall advocates for sustainability, and Susanne Kriemann's 'Canopy, canopy' (2018) connects fabric color shifts to radioactivity, prompting reflections on modernity's contradictions and historical alternatives for ecological and social considerations.
