Gordon Parks Exhibition in London Showcases Segregation and Crime Photography with New Steidl Publication
The Alison Jacques Gallery in London is showcasing "Gordon Parks: Part One" until August 1, with "Part Two" scheduled from September 1 to October 1, marking his first solo exhibition in a quarter-century. This display highlights Parks's 1956 Life series on segregation in Alabama and his 1963 coverage of the Black Muslim movement. Steidl has released 'The Atmosphere of Crime, 1957,' which chronicles Parks's 1957 Life article on crime in the U.S., featuring images housed in MoMA's collection. Parks, who passed away in 2006, served as Life's first African American staff photographer from 1948 to 1972. The Steidl publication includes contributions from Nicole R. Fleetwood, Sarah Hermanson Meister, and Bryan Stevenson. Waldemar Januszczak of the Sunday Times emphasized the exhibition's significance in the context of Black Lives Matter and the COVID-19 pandemic.
