Gordon Matta-Clark's 'Anarchitecte' Exhibition at Jeu de Paume
The Jeu de Paume in Paris presents 'Gordon Matta-Clark. Anarchitecte', a comprehensive exhibition of around one hundred photographs divided into eight sections, exploring the artist's critique of urban planning and architecture. Matta-Clark (1943-1978), a trained architect who rejected conventional architecture, used 'building cuts' to reveal hidden layers and challenge spatial categories. The exhibition highlights works such as 'Day's End' (1975), created after a fragment of New York's West Side Elevated Highway collapsed, and 'Conical Intersect' (1975), made in Paris during the construction of the Centre Pompidou, where he cut concentric circles into two buildings slated for demolition. Other key works include 'Bronx Floors' (1972), 'Walls' (1972), and 'Descending Steps for Batan' (1977). The show also features 'Anarchitecture' (1974), a series advocating for the subversion of conventional architecture, and 'Sous-sols de Paris' (1977), documenting his explorations of Parisian underground spaces including the Opéra Garnier and catacombs. The exhibition runs until September 23, 2018.
