Gordon Baldwin's First Italian Retrospective Opens at Officine Saffi in Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Fondazione Officine Saffi in Milan presents "Little hard clouds becoming vessels," the first Italian retrospective dedicated to Gordon Baldwin (1932–2025), a key figure in English modernism who transformed ceramics into contemporary art. Running until December 23, 2025, the exhibition is organized in collaboration with Kunstverein Hamburg and Corvi-Mora gallery in London. It features ceramic works from 1971 to 2008 and drawings on paper from 2016–2017. The title references Baldwin's 2008 poem "The Severity of Clouds," inspired by Jean Arp, reflecting the tension between lightness and gravity. Baldwin studied at Lincoln School of Art and Central School of Art and Design in London, later serving as head of art at Eton College and teaching at Central College, Goldsmiths College, and Royal College of Art. His works are held in collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and LACMA, and have been exhibited at Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum and York Art Gallery. On November 20, 2025, at 7 PM, the foundation hosts a poetry reading by the collective Murmur, featuring poets Maria Luce Cacciaguerra and Allison Grimaldi Donahue.
