Google Unveils AI-Powered Search Overhaul with Agentic Capabilities

ai-technology · 2026-05-19

Google announced a major transformation of its Search engine on Tuesday, moving beyond the traditional 'ten blue links' to an AI-driven experience. The new 'intelligent search box' expands for longer, conversational queries and introduces AI Overviews with follow-up questions. Starting this summer, users can create customizable 'information agents' that work 24/7 to track web changes and provide synthesized updates. Google is also launching generative UI, which builds interactive widgets and visuals in real-time based on queries. The system, built with Google DeepMind and using Gemini Flash 3.5, will roll out free to all users this summer. Additionally, users can build mini-apps via natural-language commands using the Antigravity platform. These changes are expected to further reduce referrals to publishers, which have already declined due to AI Overviews. AI Overviews now serve 2.5 billion monthly users, while AI Mode has 1 billion monthly users. Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the goal of making AI broadly accessible, including the personal agent Spark.
