Google Quietly Shelves AI Meme Tool Me Meme

Google has quietly discontinued its AI-powered "Me Meme" feature in Google Photos, which allowed users to insert their likeness into classic memes. The feature, launched just a few months ago, has had all mentions removed, including the support page and social media announcements. Android Authority reports that Me Meme may have been abandoned as early as May, as it hasn't appeared on Google Photos' creations page since late spring. No official reason was given, but lack of users is suspected. This follows a pattern of AI image apps failing to gain traction, such as OpenAI's Sora, which cost $1 million per day and was shut down in March after losing hundreds of thousands of users. Meta also faced backlash over its Muse Image model, which could create AI images of any public Instagram user, leading to privacy concerns from SAG-AFTRA and a quick reversal. Meta has a history of backtracking on AI features, including AI-generated accounts and randomly showing AI images on feeds.
