Google AI Overviews Boost Reddit Engagement by 12%
A research paper from arXiv (2605.16428) investigates the impact of Google's AI Overviews on online content platforms, specifically focusing on Reddit. This study takes advantage of Google's content moderation guidelines: Safe-for-Work (SFW) Reddit communities are both indexed and highlighted in AI Overviews, whereas Not-Safe-for-Work (NSFW) communities are indexed but not featured. Employing a difference-in-differences methodology, the findings reveal that AI Overviews lead to a 12.0% increase in daily comments and a 12.3% rise in the number of users commenting in SFW communities compared to their NSFW counterparts.
