Goodwood Art Foundation Opens with Rachel Whiteread Exhibition in English Countryside

The Goodwood Art Foundation has launched in West Sussex, England, with a new contemporary art park on the Duke of Richmond's estate. The 28-hectare green area, redesigned by landscape architect Dan Pearson, includes an ancient woodland and will host permanent installations. The foundation, chaired by independent curator Ann Gallagher (former director of British art at Tate from 2006 to 2019), was conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic. The inaugural exhibition features Rachel Whiteread (first woman to win the Turner Prize in 1993), with works including photographs and an updated concrete staircase cast from a synagogue staircase, on view until November 2, 2025. Outdoor installations include two sculptures by Isamu Noguchi, new works by Veronica Ryan (Turner Prize 2022), sound art by Susan Philipsz, a bronze sculpture by Rose Wylie, and Hélio Oiticica's Magic Square #3 from late summer. The foundation also houses a permanent environmental art collection and a café by Downie Architects. Admission is £15 with online booking.
