Gómez Platero Studio Unveils World Memorial to the Pandemic for Uruguay Coast

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Architecture and urbanism firm Gómez Platero, with offices in Uruguay, Ecuador, and Mexico, has proposed the World Memorial to the Pandemic for an unspecified coastal stretch of Uruguay. Unlike Angelo Renna's Monumento per la vita, which would transform Milan's San Siro Stadium into a 'temple of nature', this memorial features no trees but a monumental circular slab 40 meters in diameter, accessible via a pedestrian walkway from the waterfront. At its center is an opening—a void—where visitors can observe the perpetual forces of nature. The design aims to encourage remembrance and reflection, inviting visitors to 'listen to our inner selves and imagine a shared future of hope' amid sounds and silences. The experience of being surrounded by waves while looking into the 'empty heart' of the work, reserved for rocks and water, underscores nature's centrality over human fragility. If realized, the memorial could become a destination and significantly expand public space for the local community. The project was reported by Valentina Silvestrini for Artribune.
