Golden Globe-winning composer Jóhann Jóhannsson dies at 48 in Berlin
Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who won a Golden Globe in 2015 for the score of 'The Theory of Everything', was found dead in his Berlin apartment on Friday, February 9, 2018. His manager at Redbird Music confirmed the news on Facebook. The cause of death is unknown. Born in Reykjavik, Jóhannsson was 48 years old and was scheduled to perform at the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona on May 31, alongside Björk and Nick Cave. The festival organizers expressed shock on Twitter, noting he had been in Barcelona just a week earlier preparing for his appearance. Jóhannsson began his career in the Icelandic music scene, debuting with his band Daisy Hill Puppy Farm in 1988, influenced by Jesus and Mary Chain and Joy Division. In 1999 he founded the electronic band Apparat Organ Quartet, and in 2002 he released his first solo work, blending classical, avant-garde, and electronic music. His breakthrough came with the score for 'The Theory of Everything', which earned him a Golden Globe and his first Oscar nomination. In 2016 he received another Oscar nomination for 'Sicario' by Denis Villeneuve, for whom he also scored 'Prisoners' (2013). His last album, 'Orphée', was released in 2016 on Deutsche Grammophon. The classical label praised his music's enduring power.
