Goethe-Institut Dakar opens first purpose-built facility in 75-year history, designed by Kéré Architecture
The Goethe-Institut celebrated the opening of its new headquarters in Dakar on April 18, 2026, marking a significant milestone as its first purpose-built structure in 75 years. Crafted by Kéré Architecture, the two-story edifice utilizes locally sourced compressed earth blocks and incorporates a glass canopy for effective shading and insulation. The facility houses an auditorium, cafeteria, library, administrative offices, and classrooms, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. Dignitaries at the event included Senegal's Minister of Culture Amadou Ba, Germany's State Minister Serap Güler, and Goethe-Institut President Gesche Joost, who underscored the institute's commitment to cultural collaboration. Kéré expressed that the design serves as an inviting space for the diverse communities of Dakar, reflecting the city's rich cultural heritage.
