Globe Theatre: Bologna's Wunderkammer of Vintage and Design

other · 2026-04-27

Steno Tonelli, a set designer who worked with Pupi Avati on films like 'Gli amici del bar Margherita' and 'Dancing Paradise', founded the Globe Theatre in Funo di Argelato near Bologna in the 1980s. The 2000-square-meter labyrinthine cabinet of curiosities comprises over 20 themed sections, including Bar & Pub, Design, Sartoria, Valigeria (featuring historic Louis Vuitton trunks), Farmacia, Oriente, Palestra, and Macelleria. The venue specializes in buying, selling, and renting vintage furniture, modernariato, and design objects, as well as restoration and staging for fairs and shops. In September 2019, Tonelli opened a temporary store in Milan at via Canonica 81, which ran until early 2020. The Milan space attracted a diverse audience of collectors, cinema enthusiasts, and vintage lovers, showcasing items from vintage toys and the Musichiere to original works by Andy Warhol and Mario Schifano, along with film posters for 'Via col vento' and 'La Dolce Vita', ivory gongs, 19th-century shields, and fashion pieces like Vittorio Accornero's scarves for Gucci and Roberta di Camerino bags. Luca Bianchi, the Milan branch's creator, described the project as ambitious and unique, noting its potential for future developments. Tonelli views each new acquisition as 'the beginning of a new love', and the name Globe Theatre reflects his vision of staging the world.
