Global Tools 1973-1975: Radical Design's Alternative School Documented
The recently released book, 'Global Tools 1973-1975. Quando l’educazione coinciderà con la vita', curated by Valerio Borgonuovo and Silvia Franceschini, chronicles the brief existence of the Italian Radical Design collective known as Global Tools. Established on January 12, 1973, at the Casabella editorial office, the collective featured notable members such as Archizoom Associati, Remo Buti, and Ettore Sottsass Jr. Inspired by Ivan Illich's 'Deschooling Society' (1971), they sought to develop an alternative educational framework. Published by Nero Editions in Rome in 2018, the 268-page volume, priced at €35, includes insights from Maurizio Lazzarato and Franco Raggi, alongside an introduction by Beatriz Colomina. It also recounts their seminar at Roberto Magris's residence in Sambuca Val di Pesa, discussing various themes. The book was initially showcased in a condensed English edition at the 14th Istanbul Biennial (2015), under the curation of Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, emphasizing Global Tools' interdisciplinary methods as vital for tackling current ecological, globalization, and social justice challenges.
