Global Investment Appetite Declines for US and China Amid Trade Tensions, Allianz Trade Survey Reveals

economy-finance · 2026-04-17

A new report from Allianz Trade indicates that trade tensions between the United States and China have significantly reduced global corporate investment interest in both nations. The survey, conducted by the Paris-based international insurance company, found that only 24% of respondents now consider China an attractive investment destination, down from 53% the previous year. The United States fared even worse, with just 13% of firms viewing it as an export growth platform compared to 17% last year. According to Ana Boata, Allianz Trade's head of economic research, companies globally perceive an enduring rivalry between the two economic powers. She noted that protectionist policies, including tariffs implemented during the first Trump administration in 2018, remain in place and contribute to this sentiment. The findings were presented at a media briefing in Hong Kong on Thursday. The overall decline in outbound investment appetite is attributed to heightened geopolitical tensions worldwide. While US-China decoupling has not fully materialized, both countries have experienced the most substantial loss of potential future investment.
