Glenn Ligon's First Italian Solo Show at Thomas Dane Gallery, Naples
Glenn Ligon presents his first Italian solo exhibition at Thomas Dane Gallery in Naples, titled after a verse by Pier Paolo Pasolini, "Tutto Poteva, nella Poesia, Avere una Soluzione." The show features new works including the neon piece "Untitled (Siete Ospiti)," 2018, which quotes a banner displayed by a Napoli fan during a football match in Bologna, reflecting on hospitality and belonging. Another neon, "Notes for a Poem on the Third World (chapter one)," depicts two raised hands inspired by Pasolini's 1968 essay, symbolizing surrender and protest. The exhibition also includes "Stranger #88," 2018, referencing James Baldwin's "Stranger in the Village," where Ligon uses oil and charcoal on canvas to explore the difficulty of articulating blackness. The gallery is located in Villa Ruffo, the former residence of Benedetto Croce's family.
