Glauco Rodrigues' Pop Tropicalist Exhibition Revives Forgotten Artist at Bergamin & Gomide

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Galeria Bergamin & Gomide in São Paulo is currently hosting the exhibition 'Acontece que Somos Canibais!', which highlights the samba-inspired artwork of Glauco Rodrigues (1929-2004). This showcase aims to revive his contributions after a long period of overshadowing due to his divergence from modernist standards. Lilia Schwarcz wrote the exhibition text, and gallery co-owner Thiago Gomide recalls their previous collaboration during the 2019 group exhibition 'A Burrice dos Homens.' The display includes pieces from the 1960s and 70s, merging pop art with critical tropicalism. Rodrigues, who started as an engraver and relocated to Rio de Janeiro in 1958, was featured in the 1966 'Opinião 65' exhibition at MAM Rio and caught the attention of French critic Nicolas Bourriaud, who included him in the 2013 Paris exhibition 'L’Ange de l’Histoire' and the 2019 Istanbul Biennial.
