Glauco Rodrigues and Jaider Esbell exhibitions in São Paulo explore Brazil's colonial history and indigenous views.
Two exhibitions in São Paulo explore Brazil's colonial history and the ongoing challenges faced by indigenous communities. At Bergamin & Gomide, Glauco Rodrigues's retrospective 'Acontece que Somos Canibais' displays thirty paintings created between 1962 and the 1990s, offering critiques of military rule and environmental harm. Notable pieces include 'D'après Almeida Júnior' (1981) and 'Retrato de Henriette Amado' (1970), which emphasize political narratives. Meanwhile, Jaider Esbell, a Makuxi artist, presents his solo show 'Ruku' at Galleria Millan, featuring ten cotton sheet works named 'Jenipapal' (2020) and acrylic paintings that delve into Makuxi cosmology. These exhibitions reflect a growing presence of indigenous voices in Brazil, highlighted by Sandra Benites's appointment as the first indigenous curator at Museu de Arte de São Paulo in 2019. Rodrigues's exhibition is open from 4 February to 5 March 2021, while Esbell's runs from 20 February to 20 March 2021.
