Glass Utopia bridges Murano and Australia at Venice Glass Week 2020

From September 3 to 26, 2020, during the Venice Glass Week, Mr.Lawrence—a Milanese studio founded by Annalisa Rosso and Francesco Mainardi—in collaboration with 1+1 Design Gallery presents Glass Utopia, an exhibition showcasing the international 'Renaissance of glass.' The show features 24 contemporary pieces by 12 designers: six Italians partnering with Murano furnaces and companies, and six Australians. Curated by Mr.Lawrence for Craft ACT: Craft + Design Centre, in partnership with Ausglass, Design Tasmania, and the Italian Embassy in Canberra, Glass Utopia was first presented at the Design Canberra Festival 2019, then at Design Tasmania in early 2020. The project explores the present state of blown glass tradition, questioning its future and new stimuli. The Italy-Australia synergy traces back to 1967 when architect Enrico Taglietti installed two monumental Murano glass chandeliers at the Italian Ambassador's Residence in Canberra, still present today. Artists include Elizabeth Kelly, Federico Peri, Gala Fernandez, Jenni Kemarre Martiniello, Liam Fleming, Matteo Zorzenoni, Mel Douglas, Peter Bowles, Stories of Italy, Tom Skeehan, Federica Biasi, and Zanellato/Bortotto.
