Glasgow Arts Institutions Face Uncertain Future After Fire and Financial Woes
The Mackintosh building of the Glasgow School of Art, created by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1896, has yet to be restored following a fire in 2018. Established in 1845, the school revealed in July that it lacks the funds for repairs. Experts, including Gordon Gibb, are advocating for government support, highlighting the building's international significance and the existence of restoration documentation. The library, renowned for its wooden and glass design, received accolades from Duncan Chappell in 2014. Additionally, the Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) shut down earlier this year, prompting worries about its archives, featuring works by Allen Ginsberg and Ivor Cutler. Màiri McAllan, the Scottish secretary for Education, Culture and Gaelic, emphasizes the need to safeguard the archive for public access.
