Giuseppe Terragni's Sant'Elia Nursery School Furniture on Permanent Display in Como

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A permanent exhibition at the Pinacoteca di Como, curated by Roberta Lietti, showcases original furniture from Giuseppe Terragni's Sant'Elia Nursery School. The display, titled "Giuseppe Terragni per i bambini: l'asilo Sant'Elia," was prompted by the rediscovery of original furnishings in the museum's and school's storage. Terragni's 1935 design integrated spatial layout, furnishings, and social context, prioritizing children's needs. The furniture, including desks, chairs, and the Lariana and Benita seats, features tubular metal and innovative "double cantilever" elasticity. Exhibition designer Paolo Brambilla created backlit photowalls emphasizing historical documentation of children using the space. Curator Lietti notes the school's current state of abandonment and hopes for its future conversion into an educational center. The exhibition is part of a broader initiative to return Como's architectural heritage to the public.
