Giuseppe Stampone returns to Abruzzo, founding studio under Gran Sasso

artist · 2026-05-16

After years in New York, Rome, and Brussels, Italian artist Giuseppe Stampone (born 1974 in Cluses) has returned to his native Abruzzo, settling in the province of Teramo. Following the loss of his parents and his wife Maria Crispal's serious illness, Stampone purchased a farmhouse under the Gran Sasso massif, which he is restoring to house the Archivio Giuseppe Stampone-Maria Crispal and an artist residency. The archive will hold over two hundred works by artists including Marinella Senatore, Stefano Arienti, Michaël Borremans, and Luigi Ontani. The project, titled 'Abruzzo Mon Amour,' won a PAC (Contemporary Art Plan) award two years ago and will include a dedicated archive on the flora and fauna of the Monti della Laga, Gran Sasso, and Abruzzo National Park. Stampone's series of works focused on Gran Sasso encapsulates his 'return home' narrative. He also runs 'Global Education,' an educational program created with Crispal in 2002 for schools and companies, promoting participatory literacy. Stampone rejects the terms 'center' and 'periphery' as anachronistic, preferring 'ubiquity' to describe his current condition living under Gran Sasso while remaining globally connected.
