Giuseppe Penone's 'Gesti Universali' at Galleria Borghese

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Galleria Borghese in Rome presents 'Gesti Universali', the final exhibition in its art-and-nature series, dedicated to Arte Povera master Giuseppe Penone (born Garessio, 1947) and curated by Francesco Stocchi. The show unfolds across the Salone di Mariano Rossi, Sala di Apollo e Dafne, Sala degli Imperatori, and Sala di Enea ed Anchise, then extends into the courtyard and the Giardino della Meridiana. Works such as 'Sguardo vegetale', 'Soffio di foglie', and 'Respirare l'ombra' occupy interior spaces as gentle autonomous presences alongside Baroque masterpieces, deliberately avoiding formal or symbolic comparison. Penone explains that inside the gallery, he is the active subject producing works from fixed wood, as seen in the entrance trees, while in the park, a human gesture fossilized in bronze interacts with active nature that completes the sculpture over time. This osmosis between fixed human gesture and active vegetation complements the indoor works.
