Giuseppe Penone's 11 Ceramic Discs Debut at Frick Collection

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Giuseppe Penone's ceramic works are on view at Frick Madison, the temporary New York home of the Frick Collection, for spring and summer 2022. The exhibition "Propagazioni: Giuseppe Penone a Sèvres," curated by Giulio Dalvit, presents 11 ceramic discs created in 2013 in collaboration with the Sèvres porcelain manufactory in France. This marks the first time the Frick, known for its Old Master paintings, has featured ceramics. The discs continue Penone's "Propagazioni" series begun in 1995. Each disc bears the imprint of Penone's finger in black ink, except one with gold variation, with thin lines radiating outward. The works are displayed on the third floor to dialogue with the adjacent gallery of 18th-century porcelains from Sèvres, Meissen, and Du Paquier. The Frick has previously collaborated with contemporary ceramic artists Arlene Shechet (2016) and Edmund de Waal (2019). A catalog edited by Dalvit includes an introduction by deputy director Xavier F. Salomon and chief curator Peter Jay Sharp. Director Ian Wardropper expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. Penone, a leading Arte Povera artist, won the McKim Medal (2017) and the Praemium Imperiale (2014).
