Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo's 'Il Quarto Stato' Moves to GAM Milano

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo's iconic painting 'Il Quarto Stato' (The Fourth Estate) has been relocated from the Museo del Novecento to the Galleria d'Arte Moderna (GAM) in Milan. The move is part of a broader reorganization of the city's civic collections overseen by Milan's culture councillor Tommaso Sacchi and museum director Gianfranco Maraniello, appointed in May 2022. The painting, created between 1898 and 1901, depicts a march of striking workers and has become a symbol of labor rights, famously used in the opening credits of Bernardo Bertolucci's 1976 film 'Novecento'. Initially unsuccessful when presented at the 1902 Quadriennale di Torino, it was later acquired by the city of Milan in 1921 and hidden during Fascism before being reinstalled in the 1950s. The relocation makes room for the Mattioli collection, 26 Futurist masterpieces previously at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, now housed at the Museo del Novecento. The painting had been displayed freely accessible at the Museo del Novecento's entrance since 2010.
