Giuseppe Parini: 18th-Century Poet and Satirist of the Aristocracy
Giuseppe Parini, born on May 23, 1729, in Bosisio (now Bosisio Parini), was an Italian poet and satirist whose work bridged Arcadian classicism and Enlightenment thought. After studying with the Barnabites, he published a collection of poems in 1752 under the pseudonym Ripano Eupilino, gaining entry into the Accademia dei Trasformati. There he connected with intellectuals like Giuseppe Baretti and Pietro Verri. Ordained a priest, he worked as a tutor for the Serbelloni family, where exposure to Rousseau, Voltaire, and Montesquieu shaped his critical view of the aristocracy. His masterpiece, the mock-heroic poem "Il Giorno" (published in parts from 1763), satirizes the idle life of a young nobleman, using epic language to highlight moral decay. The episode "La Vergine Cuccia" reflects his own dismissal from the Serbelloni household after defending a servant. His "Odi" (1791) blend encomiastic, rustic, and materialist themes, urging the nobility to reform. Parini died on August 15, 1799, in Milan during the Napoleonic upheavals. Giacomo Leopardi later praised him as one of the few Italians to combine literary excellence with profound thought.
