Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, Influential Collector of Post-War American Art, Dies at 87

On April 24, 2010, Count Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, a prominent Italian collector of Post-War American art, passed away in Milan at the age of 87. Alongside his wife, Giovanna, he amassed three significant collections starting in the mid-1950s, comprising 2,500 pieces from renowned artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Mark Rothko, and Franz Kline. Their efforts greatly impacted art history and benefited institutions like the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. In 1996, the couple gifted Villa Menafoglio Litta Panza in Varese to Fondo Ambiente Italiano, which reopened as Villa Panza Museum in 2000. A studio visit in 1992 resulted in the acquisition of 41 large artworks, with their final encounter in November 2008 involving a small painting and dinner at Da Silvano.
