Giuseppe Mastromatteo's 'Humanscape' Book and Exhibition

publication · 2026-05-04

Giuseppe Mastromatteo's book 'Humanscape', published by Silvana Editoriale and curated by Benedetta Donato, collects human landscapes created through the faces of many people. The volume features works from his Eyedentikit series, including the cover photograph. Mastromatteo conducted street castings to find subjects willing to be portrayed, but a subtle manipulation unites all portraits: each subject shares the artist's own intense blue eyes, inserted via post-production. The artist's self-portrait serves as the matrix. The work explores themes of globalization, identity, and the collective 'we', where Mastromatteo provides the eyes and the other provides the face, annihilating both individual existences. Subjects were free to present themselves as they wished. The book includes texts by various contributors. An exhibition of the same title runs at 29 ARTS IN PROGRESS gallery in Milan until November 18, curated by Giovanni Pelloso. Mastromatteo, an art director at an advertising agency and avid collector, cites influences from Thomas Ruff and Gillian Wearing.
