Giuseppe Loy: The Photographer of Italy's Economic Miracle
Giuseppe Loy (Cagliari, 1928 – Rome, 1981) was an Italian photographer who captured Italy's transformation from post-war reconstruction to the 'dolce vita' of the 1950s and 1960s. A self-taught master of black-and-white photography, he took over 70,000 images with his Leica, documenting everyday life—from crowded beaches to avant-garde artists' studios. Loy worked as a construction executive and briefly in film as a production secretary and manager for Scalera Film, casting bald men for movies like 'War and Peace' (1956) and 'La Grande Strada Azzurra' (1957). He began photographing in the late 1950s, focusing on simple, authentic humanity in Rome's streets and beaches, akin to the subjects of Pier Paolo Pasolini and Elsa Morante. In 1968 he joined the Italian Communist Party, promoting cultural centers in southern Italy. Loy received little recognition during his lifetime: some exhibitions at Libreria Einaudi and Il Politecnico in the 1960s-70s, and a show at Galleria Il Segno in 1979. After his death from a heart attack in 1981, two more solo shows at Galleria Il Segno (1983 and 2004) and one at Galleria Sulcis in Cagliari (2014) followed. A major retrospective, 'Giuseppe Loy. Una certa Italia. Fotografie 1959-1981,' curated by Chiara Agradi and Angelo Loy at Palazzo Barberini in 2021 (catalog Drago), finally brought his work to prominence. His archive, managed by his son Angelo, is available online.
