artist · 2026-05-05

Giuseppe Friscia, an Italian painter, ceramist, and sculptor, has died at age 63. Born in Arezzo, he graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze in 1980. Early in his career, he met painter Piero Dorazio in Todi, who became a mentor. Friscia traveled extensively in Europe, visiting Zurich, Dresden, Dessau, and Prague, before moving to the United States. In 1992, entrepreneur Patrizio Bertelli funded a scholarship for Friscia to return to the US, where he lived in New York for five years. There, he worked in Mark di Suvero's studio in Queens and befriended Roberto Baciocchi, Miuccia Prada, Patrizio Bertelli, Mark Reutter, and Angelo Savelli. All work from this period was acquired and archived by Fondazione Prada in Milan. Returning to Arezzo in 1997, he collaborated with Bertolotti on industrial color design for steel, aeronautics, and railway machinery, which led him to sculpture. His practice spanned painting, ceramics, and large metal sculptures, characterized by an accumulation of signs, scratches, and clumps of color. Dorazio praised him as a generous and free colorist, not a market-driven pseudo-intellectual. Friscia's later work sought formal equilibrium, with compositions where time and space transcend limits, resulting in minimalist and rigorous straight lines.
