Giuseppe De Nittis Debuts in the US with Major Phillips Collection Show
Giuseppe De Nittis, an Italian Impressionist painter born in Barletta in 1846, is the subject of his first US exhibition, "An Italian Impressionist in Paris: Giuseppe De Nittis," at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. The show features 74 works, including 32 never-before-exhibited pieces from the Pinacoteca Giuseppe De Nittis, alongside loans from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Louvre, the Petit Palais, the Musée Carnavalet, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Curated by art historian Renato Miracco, the exhibition is based on recent international scholarship and aims to reintroduce De Nittis—a versatile innovator who died at 38—as a key figure for a generation of European painters. It includes comparative works by Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, and Gustave Caillebotte. The project is supported by a consortium of Puglian institutions: the Pinacoteca Giuseppe De Nittis, the Comune di Barletta, the Regione Puglia, and the Fondazione Pino Pascali. Dorothy Kosinski, CEO and director of Vradeburg, highlighted the significance of the previously unseen works.
