Giuseppe Cavalli: The Lawyer-Photographer Who Championed Pure Photography

Giuseppe Cavalli (1904–1961), a lawyer and photographer from Lucera, Italy, co-founded the La Bussola group in Milan in 1947 with Mario Finazzi, Ferruccio Leiss, Federico Vender, and Luigi Veronesi. The group's manifesto declared photography as art, rejecting both fascist rhetoric and romantic pictorialism. Cavalli's aesthetic emphasized purity, severity, and geometric rigor, often depicting still lifes with luminous clarity. His style, dubbed "mediterranean," gained international acclaim. In 1942, he published "Otto fotografi italiani d'oggi," a manifesto for photographic aesthetics. In 1954, he founded the Associazione Fotografica Misa in Senigallia, mentoring young photographers like Mario Giacomelli, Ferruccio Ferroni, Piergiorgio Branzi, and Alfredo Camisa. His works are held at the Museo d'Arte Moderna, dell'Informazione e della Fotografia in Senigallia, which hosted the 2021 exhibition "Diverse solitudini. Giuseppe ed Emanuele Cavalli fotografi" curated by Angela Madesani. Cavalli also played piano, read classics, and collaborated with his twin brother Emanuele, a pioneer of tonal painting, and other Tuscan artists including Vincenzo Balocchi, Alex Franchini Stappo, and Giuseppe Vannucci Zauli.
