Giungla Festival 2024: Contemporary Art Takes Over Lucca's Historic Market
The Giungla festival of contemporary art is set for its fifth edition at the Mercato del Carmine, running from May 3 to 5, 2024, after moving from Lucca's Orto Botanico. Since it started in 2020, the festival has explored the connections among humanity, nature, technology, and science. A collective exhibition will also occur from November 14 to 17, 2024. The Mercato del Carmine, originally a Carmelite convent closed in 1866 and reopened in 1936, is currently being restored with over €3 million from the Pnrr, awarded to 4223 srl in 2023. Restoration has uncovered 15th and 17th-century frescoes, expected to finish by 2026. This market will also host food boutiques and cultural events. The 2024 theme, 'Giungla Radicale,' curated by Irene Panzani, will focus on migration, the digital divide, and artisanal practices, featuring artists like Bertrand Dezoteux and Emeka Ogboh. The 4223 srl team consists of young locals returning to innovate in their city.
