Giulio Paolini Wins Praemium Imperiale 2022
Giulio Paolini, an influential name in Italian conceptual art, was awarded the 2022 Praemium Imperiale in painting. This prestigious honor, organized by the Japan Art Association, is now in its 33rd year. Paolini joins the ranks of previous Italian recipients, Michelangelo Pistoletto (2013) and Giuseppe Penone (2014). Each winner is presented with 15 million yen (approximately €105,000) along with a diploma. Additionally, the association offers a yearly scholarship of 5 million yen (around €35,000) to promote youth arts, which this year was awarded to the Kronberg Academy Foundation. Other laureates for 2022 included Ai Weiwei and Wim Wenders. In his acceptance speech, Paolini alluded to a forthcoming exhibition in Rome and voiced doubts about the commercial art market and NFTs.
