Giulio Paolini's Analytical Sensualism at Galerie Yvon Lambert

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Giulio Paolini's solo exhibition at Galerie Yvon Lambert in Paris, running from September 7 to October 6, 2012, showcases his ongoing investigation into the mechanics of representation. Since the 1960s, Paolini has combined analytical rigor with a sensualist aesthetic, using mirrors, frames, and blank canvases to deconstruct visual perception. The exhibition includes twelve works from the series 'Studi per "Sala d'attesa"' (2012), where figurative and abstract elements are drawn or collaged onto photographic reproductions of the artist's living room, disrupting mimetic illusion. In one piece, a man holds frames and canvases that obscure him, a cross drawing suggests perspective construction, and paper scraps and paint marks contradict three-dimensional space. Two installations, 'Sala d'attesa' (2012) and 'Ici et maintenant' (2012), combine translucent plexiglass, mirrors, frames, mat boards, pencil sketches, and easels to highlight and nullify the traditional elements of representation. Paolini's work remains reflexive yet formally refined, avoiding the austerity often associated with conceptual art.
