Giulio Giorello, philosopher and comics enthusiast, dies at 75 from COVID-19

Giulio Giorello, a professor of Philosophy of Science at the University of Milan and a noted free thinker, died at age 75 after a two-month hospitalization for COVID-19. Born in Milan on May 14, 1945, he studied under Ludovico Geymonat, earning degrees in Philosophy (1968) and Mathematics (1978). Giorello was a passionate comics fan who saw the medium as sophisticated and complex. He co-authored "La filosofia di Topolino" (Guanda, 2013) with Ilaria Cozzaglio and "La scienza tra le nuvole" (Raffaello Cortina Editore, 2007) with Pier Luigi Gaspa. In a 2017 interview with Loris Cantarelli in "Fumo di china," he displayed deep knowledge of comics. Colleagues Pier Luigi Gaspa and Luca Raffaelli recall his intellectual freedom, curiosity, and ability to bridge humanities and sciences. Gaspa notes their friendship began in 2004 in Genoa and led to collaborations including "Giardini del fantastico." Raffaelli emphasizes Giorello's philosophy as liberating, not dogmatic, and his sincere passion for comics as a source of truth.
